چکیده

All-female species of Poeciliopsis depend upon ~ ~ of closely related species for sperm. This relationship creates a competitive situation in which bisexual ~ ~ compete with unisexual ~ ~ for sperm from ~ ~ of the bisexual species. Earlier studies demonstrated a sufficient mechanism inherent in the behavior of ~ ~ for allowing coexistence in mixed unisexualbisexual populations. Courtship preference of ~ ~ for conspecific ~ ~ is dynamically countered by social interaction among ~ ~ : subordinate males mate with unisexual ~ ~ in impetuous courtships. The Poeciliopsis monacha-Poeciliopsis 2 monacha-lucida complex occurs naturally in small isolated populations where stochastic factors are not negligible. This paper evaluates the stability of small populations of this complex by laboratory population experimentation and stochastic computer simulation. Three small mixed populations persisted in the laboratory for 2 yr but extinction of the bisexual species occurred in four of nine simulated replicates of these experiments. Life tables and fitness values calculated from estimates of birth and death rates showed the all-female species to be much more fit in the laboratory populations than was the bisexual species. Additional simulations done at relative fitness values more characteristic of natural populations indicated that extinctions in small isolates would be rare in nature. Isolated demes can become confluent during the annual rainy season. It was expected that this confluence, by effectively increasing population size, might enhance stability by reducing the effect of stochastic factors; simulations of two and four demes mixed annually did not support this hypothesis.

An ancient clonal lineage in the fish genus Poeciliopsis (Atheriniformes: Poeciliidae).

Genetic diversity in mtDNA was assessed within the unisexual (all female) hybridogenetic fish Poeciliopsis monacha-occidentalis and the two sexual species from which it arose. Results confirm that P. monacha was the maternal ancestor and that paternal leakage of P. occidentalis mtDNA has not occurred. Of particular interest is the high level of de novo mutational divergence within one hybridoge...

Molecular evidence for multiple origins of hybridogenetic fish clones (Poeciliidae:Poeciliopsis).

Hybrid matings between the sexual species Poeciliopsis monacha and Poeciliopsis lucida produced a series of diploid all-female lineages of P. monacha-lucida that inhabit the Río Fuerte of northwestern Mexico. Restriction site analyses of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) clearly revealed that P. monacha was the maternal ancestor of these hybrids. The high level of mtDNA diversity in P. monacha was mirr...

Gonopodial system review and a new fish record of Poeciliopsis infans (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae) for Lake Patzcuaro, Michoacan, central Mexico.

Since 1997, Poeciliopsis infans Woolman 1894 has been recognized as a new inhabitant of Lake Patzcuaro, Michoacan in Central Mexico. Between February 1997 and October 1998, nine fish samples were collected at Lake Patzcuaro. Morphometric and meristic counts were conducted on a random selection of 40 organisms of both sexes of Poeciliopsis infans. Males of these viviparous fish posses a modified...

Analysis of expressed sequence tags from the placenta of the live-bearing fish Poeciliopsis (Poeciliidae).

Matrotrophic fish in the genus Poeciliopsis (Poeciliidae) have a placenta-like structure used in postfertilization maternal provisioning of the developing embryo. To understand better the structure and function of the Poeciliopsis placenta, we derived cDNA libraries from the maternal follicular placenta of 2 matrotrophic Poeciliopsis sister species, P. turneri and P. presidionis. These species ...

Unexpected monophyletic origin of Ephoron shigae unisexual reproduction strains and their rapid expansion across Japan

The burrowing polymitarcyid mayfly Ephoron shigae is distributed across Japan, Korea, northeast China and far east Russia. Some populations are bisexual, and others are unisexual, i.e. geographically parthenogenetic throughout Japan. In general, parthenogenetic organisms are often found in harsh environments, such as at high latitudes and altitudes, in xeric as opposed to mesic conditions, in i...
